A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to make a cake to display at my grandma's funeral. Grandma Draper made the most beautiful ornate wedding cakes.
Grandma was well-known for her gravity-defying drop work. I regret never taking the time to learn that from her. However, I knew I had to try it. My dad gave me some tips which I absolutely loved and needed. In true Draper form, I practiced on my cabinets first. (That's how Grandma taught my dad, aunt, and uncles).
As my piping tip touched the first toothpick, I could hear Grandma telling me to go slow and let it drop before I hooked it onto the next toothpick. When I finished, I knew Grandma was guiding me. It's definitely not perfect, but I know every time I pipe that drop work, Grandma Draper will be with me.

Grandma joined Grandpa in Heaven yesterday morning. I know it was a sweet reunion, but it didn't make her loss any easier.
Growing up, Grandma always had cake at her house. I'd watch in awe for hours as she effortlessly piped delicate drop work around cake tiers and added beautiful piping.
Grandma and I would talk for hours about wedding cakes and different techniques. She was in awe of all the new gadgets we have now while I was blown away at the skill she had to make the most beautiful cakes with limited equipment. I was so humbled and taken back when Grandma asked ME to teach HER. There was absolutely nothing I could teach her, but that's who Grandma was. She always made you feel special. She was my inspiration, and every cake I share with you honors her legacy. You may not realize it, but a small part of your wedding story is a part of Grandma Draper's legacy.
